superfoods - the everyday trend

The concept of foods providing super health-related benefits isn’t new. In fact, the term superfood has been used to describe some fruits as far back as 1917. First it was bananas, then blueberries and today we even consider the simple peanut a superfood. With so much media focus on health, dieting and fitness the average Joe and Jane is paying more attention than ever to what they put in their body. As a result, you’d be forgiven for thinking the recent surge in superfood popularity was nothing more than just another health trend. However, athletes in pursuit of speed, strength, and power have been boosting performance by incorporating superfoods into their diets for decades. What makes a food Super Superfood refers to foods which contain minimal calories but are dense with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients linked to the promotion of personal wellness, and/or the prevention of illness and disease. The great thing is superfoods are so common and accessible you’re likely already consuming them on a daily basis. Some of the fruits and vegetables you already eat are the most common superfoods because of something known as phytochemicals (plant compounds which may affect human health).

Examples of phytochemicals include:

  • Carotenoids (grapefruit, carrots, bell peppers) may prevent cancers, help your eyesight and support healthier skin.

  • Antioxidants (peanuts, coconuts, grapes, beets) protect your body from harmful free radicals and may help prevent cancers

  • Flavonoids (almonds, grapefruits, chickpeas) reduce inflammation and may assist disease prevention.

  • Some of the superfoods which play a starring role in Sport Pux bars include:

Coconuts - As both a juice and a milk coconuts provide a rich source of various nutrients, such as healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. Some of the potential athletic benefits include:

  • Energy: Coconut milk contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) which are easily metabolized by the body to provide a quick source of energy.

  • Hydration & Recovery: Water content in coconut juice powder can help restore fluids lost during physical activity, while antioxidants and healthy fats reduce inflammation and assist recovery.

  • Replenishing Electrolytes: Coconut juice powder is a good source of electrolytes such as potassium, magnesium and sodium which can support proper muscle function.

  • Heart Health: Antioxidants and other compounds may help lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease.

Grapes - The benefit of grape powder is tied to flavonoids, anthocyanins, and antioxidants. Potential health benefits include reduced inflammation, heart disease prevention, improved cognitive function, and reduced risk for some cancers. Beets - Beets are the superheroes of the superfood world. Some of the athletic benefits include:

  • Endurance & Power: Beet powder is a good source of nitrates, which can increase blood flow and oxygen delivery to the muscles during exercise, boosting both endurance and strength.

  • Recovery: Antioxidants like vitamin C and betalains can help reduce inflammation and promote muscle recovery after intense exercise.

  • Cardiovascular Health: Beet powder can help improve cardiovascular health by reducing blood pressure and improving blood flow.

Peanuts and Almonds - Whether consumed raw, as a powder or even a butter, peanuts and almonds are a great source of healthy fats, fiber, and protein. Additional health benefits may include reducing bad cholesterol levels, promoting healthy blood flow, repairing muscle, assisting with weight management, and preventing chronic disease. The healthiest diets are diverse, fun and balanced. For busy adults a good way to incorporate superfoods into your diet is to make your shopping an adventure of colors. Color variety indicates different nutrients with different health benefits.
